Most CNC quote delays are not caused by difficult geometry. They are caused by unanswered questions about what the customer actually needs.
Send both model and drawing when available
STEP files help estimate geometry and machining operations. A 2D drawing communicates tolerances, surface finish, notes and inspection requirements. If the files disagree, identify which revision is authoritative.
Quantities change the manufacturing plan
A prototype, a batch of twenty and a recurring production order may require different setups and inspection plans. State annual forecast separately from the quantity you are ordering now. Ask for quantity breaks when useful.
Material and finish must be specific
Specify the exact material grade and standard, heat treatment, coating, color and any certificate requirements. “Stainless steel” or “anodized aluminum” is not always enough to price accurately.
Call out the costly features
Tight tolerances, deep pockets, long bores, thin walls, fine threads and critical flatness may drive machining time. Mark critical dimensions rather than applying the same tight tolerance to every feature.
Tell the supplier what documents you need
First-article reports, CMM inspection, PPAP, batch certificates and special packaging should be priced into the quotation. Add target delivery location and Incoterm if freight is part of the comparison.
A practical RFQ email
Include part number, revision, drawings, model, material, finish, order quantity, expected repeat volume, inspection requirements, delivery destination and requested quotation date. A complete RFQ reduces clarification loops.
Additional manufacturing considerations
A supplier can often estimate a simple part from a 3D model, but a reliable production quotation requires more. Missing threads, tolerances, finishes or inspection requirements can change the manufacturing route and price. Clarifying them early is faster than revising the quotation after a purchase order.
The 3D model supports geometry review and CAM planning; the 2D drawing typically defines tolerances, materials, threads and notes. Make sure filenames, part numbers and revisions agree. If one file supersedes another, say so explicitly.
Include quantity per release, estimated annual demand, delivery destination, required lead time and any target schedule. Price breaks may depend on batch size rather than annual volume alone. If there are multiple parts, use a clear part-number list with quantities and revision levels.
State material certificate requirements, dimensional reports, CMM sample counts, first-article inspection, PPAP level where applicable and any special packaging. A low unit price that excludes necessary documentation is not comparable with a fully compliant quotation.
Before sending: part number and revision; 2D PDF; STEP model; material standard; finish; critical tolerances; quantity; target delivery; inspection documents; shipping destination; and known assembly concerns. Invite the supplier to flag manufacturability questions rather than guessing. Good RFQs produce better engineering discussions—and fewer surprises.
Ask the supplier to identify the drawing revision being quoted, any assumptions that affect cost, and the inspection evidence that will accompany the parts. Where a feature is critical to assembly, agree on a measurable acceptance method before production begins.
If you are sourcing custom CNC machined components, send XS Precision your 2D drawing, 3D model, material specification, quantity and required inspection documents. We can review the manufacturing scope and clarify open technical questions before preparing a quotation.
Questions to resolve before placing an order
- Which dimensions or functional interfaces are critical for this custom CNC machining quote project?
- What material, finish and inspection evidence should be included with each shipment?
- Which drawing revision, quantity and delivery assumptions should the supplier use?
