A polymer component is not simply a metal component made from a softer material. The choice of plastic changes how it is machined and inspected.
Plastic machining is not metal machining
Engineering plastics respond differently to heat, clamping pressure and cutting forces. A part can meet size immediately after machining and then change with temperature or moisture. Choose a realistic inspection condition.
POM for dimensional stability
POM is often chosen for low friction, wear performance and relatively stable dimensions. Grade, color and stock form still need confirmation. Sharp edges and thin sections can be vulnerable to handling damage.
PA6G cast nylon and moisture
Cast nylon can be useful for wear parts, guides and rollers, but moisture absorption affects dimensions. The buyer should specify whether measurements are required in a conditioned state and whether natural or colored material is acceptable.
PTFE needs a different approach
PTFE offers chemical resistance and low friction but is relatively soft and can deform under load. Workholding and measurement pressure require care. Avoid assuming that a tolerance feasible in POM is equally straightforward in PTFE.
Better RFQs for plastic parts
Include material grade, color, operating temperature, mating parts, critical dimensions, quantity and inspection conditions. A sample can help verify fit before committing to a larger batch.
Additional manufacturing considerations
Engineering plastics need their own process rules
POM, cast nylon (PA6G) and PTFE are often grouped together as “plastic machining,” yet they behave differently under cutting forces, temperature and measurement conditions. A drawing that is easy to hold in aluminum may require a different tolerance strategy in polymer.
POM (acetal) is commonly selected for low-friction components, guides and precision plastic features. It machines cleanly with suitable tools, but dimensional behavior still depends on grade, section size and service temperature. Confirm whether the customer requires a particular commercial grade or color.
Cast nylon can be useful for wear components and larger parts, but moisture absorption can influence dimensions. A tight inspection requirement should specify the conditioning and measurement environment where relevant. “PA6G” alone may not define color, additives or supplier-specific grade.
PTFE requires a different tolerance conversation
PTFE is valued for chemical resistance and low friction, but it is relatively soft and can deform under clamping and measurement pressure. Thin walls and fine details need careful workholding. Inspectors should avoid applying metal-part measurement habits without considering the material response.
Specify operating temperature, load, chemical exposure, mating materials, color and critical dimensions. For sliding parts, identify whether the component is a bearing, seal, spacer or guide. This context helps a supplier suggest a practical machining and inspection plan without silently changing the specified material.
Ask the supplier to identify the drawing revision being quoted, any assumptions that affect cost, and the inspection evidence that will accompany the parts. Where a feature is critical to assembly, agree on a measurable acceptance method before production begins.
