Quality paperwork can take as much planning as the machining itself. Buyers get better results when documentation is specified before the supplier quotes.

A CMM report answers a specific question

Coordinate measuring machines can verify selected geometric characteristics against a defined datum scheme. The report is only meaningful when it identifies the drawing revision, measured features, acceptance criteria and the actual sample.

Sample size and inspection scope

A request for ten random CMM samples is different from first-article inspection or 100% inspection. Confirm sampling plan, lot definition, characteristics and whether a fixture is needed. These details affect both price and lead time.

PPAP is a package, not a single certificate

Production Part Approval Process requirements depend on the customer and submission level. Possible elements include process flow, PFMEA, control plan, measurement system studies and dimensional results. Do not claim PPAP compliance without agreeing on the required scope.

Material traceability and certificates

A material test report should be traceable to the supplied stock and the production batch where required. A generic supplier declaration does not replace an agreed test certificate. Clarify EN 10204 3.1 or other required format in the RFQ.

Agree documentation before ordering

Ask the buyer to list every deliverable and the timing: first article, each shipment or each production lot. A clear document matrix prevents last-minute surprises at dispatch.

Additional manufacturing considerations

“Inspection report required” is not enough

A supplier may interpret this as a basic dimensional check, while the customer expects ten random CMM reports, a PPAP submission and a material certificate for every lot. Those are different deliverables with different costs and lead times. Quality documentation should be part of the RFQ, not a surprise after production.

A coordinate measuring machine can measure many geometric features, but the report is only useful if it reflects the drawing revision, datum scheme, measurement method and agreed sample size. A request for ten random samples should state whether ten individual reports or one consolidated report is expected.

Material documents answer traceability questions

A certificate of conformity is not identical to a mill test report. For traceability, the buyer may need a heat-specific material certificate linked to the production batch. Confirm the required certificate type, applicable material standard and whether chemical and mechanical results are needed.

Production Part Approval Process documentation can involve dimensional results, process flow, PFMEA, control plan, material records, samples and other elements according to the requested submission level and customer-specific requirements. A supplier should not promise “full PPAP” without agreeing on the level, scope and approval route.

List first-article inspection, in-process checks, final inspection, sample quantities, inspection fixtures, PPAP level and per-lot documentation separately. A precise agreement reduces disputes and helps buyers compare quotations on an equal basis.

Ask the supplier to identify the drawing revision being quoted, any assumptions that affect cost, and the inspection evidence that will accompany the parts. Where a feature is critical to assembly, agree on a measurable acceptance method before production begins.

Questions to resolve before placing an order

  • Which dimensions or functional interfaces are critical for this CNC machining quality control project?
  • What material, finish and inspection evidence should be included with each shipment?
  • Which drawing revision, quantity and delivery assumptions should the supplier use?
